Texas Health Plano announces new Chairman of its Board of Trustees
PLANO, TX – Feb. 15, 2010 – Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano has named Ken Jarvis, a well-known Plano community leader and retired human resources executive, as chairman of its board of trustees. Jarvis has been an active member of Texas Health Plano’s board since 2006.
“Our board of trustees’ involvement and dedication is vital to making our hospital the community leader it has been for almost two decades,” said Dr. Jeffrey Canose, Texas Health Plano president. “Ken has played an important role as a member of our board, and we are excited that he has agreed to serve as our chairman. His business expertise and his insight into the needs of the North Texas area have been instrumental in helping us fulfill our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve.”
Jarvis is co-founder and chairman emeritus of The Mutual Alliance Restoring Community Hope (MARCH) Foundation, a nonprofit foundation supporting higher education and human welfare, and having distributed more than $250,000 in grants and scholarships to more than 1,000 students since its inception in 1998.
Jarvis retired from United Parcel Service in 1993 after serving at the company for 37 years. He began his career there as a package loader-unloader and progressed up the ranks to various operational and administrative positions before managing human resource departments in San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, and the Southwest and Northwest regions, and retiring from the company’s corporate offices in Atlanta.
Upon retirement, Jarvis and his wife Kay of 56 years, moved back to the Dallas area, where they had lived for 10 years earlier during his UPS career. Both since have served in leadership roles in numerous community organizations. Jarvis is a former member of the board of directors of the Bay Area Urban League, the Bethlehem Center of Dallas, The Plano Symphony Orchestra and the Plano Library system. He also chaired the Plano Civil Service Commission for six years and has served in various positions with several other organizations such as the Opportunities Industrialization Center of Chicago, Southern Christian Leadership Conference in Atlanta and the National Association of Student Employment Administrators.
Jarvis is a Life Golden Heritage member of the NAACP. He also provides management consulting to various organizations and firms.
Jarvis was recruited to Texas Health Plano’s board by Jim Boswell, administrative director of physician services at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano and a strong community advocate and supporter.
“Jim talked me into helping at the hospital and serving on the board,” Jarvis said. “Of all the boards I’ve served on, this is the most homogenous one I’ve ever known. We work together well and have fun, and are very dedicated to improving the quality of service at the hospital and to its patients.”
Jarvis succeeds Bobby Ray as chairman. Ray, a group president of Hovnanian Enterprises, was a partner and president of Goodman Family of Builders, a top Dallas-Fort Worth homebuilder acquired by Hovnanian in 1999. He will continue to serve as a member of Texas Health Plano’s board of trustees.
