Lawrence Lewis has been named to the Board of the MARCH Foundation. Lewis is retired Vice President of Human Resources, U.S. Operations for UPS. He was responsible for all facets of Human Resources activities including hiring, training, retention, employee relations, and wellness and safety for UPS’s U.S. small-package business unit, UPS Airlines, UPS Freight, and The UPS Store.
Lewis led a dedicated team of senior staff, directors, managers, and supervisors responsible for the company’s people practice for nearly 400,000 employees. Other responsibilities he had included vision and strategy development, training and education, cost planning, cost analysis, people development, and career and succession planning.
A native of Jackson, Mississippi, Lewis began his UPS career in 1977 as a package handler in the Jackson Hub. After a promotion to management, he worked as a part-time supervisor in operations and Human Resources before earning a package car driver assignment in 1984.
Lewis was promoted into full-time management the same year. He worked in a number of staff and operations assignments before becoming Health & Safety Manager in 1988. He continued to gain broad Human Resources experience serving as Workforce Planning Manager, and later as a Package Operations Manager.
He was promoted to director in 1992 and relocated to Omaha, Nebraska, as the Nebraska District Human Resources Director. Additional responsibilities for South and North Dakota came a year later. Lewis held the same position in Michigan before accepting an assignment in Corporate Employee Relations in 1999.
Lewis continued to take on assignments of increasing responsibility and was promoted to Senior Staff Manager for the Atlanta Corporate Campus in 2001. He relocated to Chicago in 2003 after being named UPS’s North Central Region Human Resources Manager. He returned to Atlanta in 2012 as the Human Resources Operations Manager for U.S. Operations. Two years later Lewis was promoted to the role of Vice President of Human Resources, U.S. Operations.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in Biology from Jackson State University. He and his wife, Alaine, have two grown children. Lewis is a past board chairman of the Quad County Urban League in Aurora, Illinois, and a past board member of the Atlanta Children’s Shelter in Atlanta, Georgia.
