Carlton began his career in the Indiana District in 1980 as a part-time package handler. Carlton later served as manager of both Automotive and Plant Engineering in South Illinois, and Automotive manager in the Kentucky District. In 2002, he was promoted to vice president of Automotive for the Southeast Region, and in 2009 he assumed the assignment of North Central Region Automotive manager.
In 2012, Carlton was promoted to vice president of Corporate Automotive for U.S. Operations. In 2016, he was promoted to his most recent assignment as president of Global Fleet Maintenance & Engineering.
